Driver with long history of arrests sought in deadly Florida day care crash

Florida – The man being sought in the probe of a deadly car crash into a Florida day care center was the driver of the vehicle that fled the scene, authorities said early Thursday.

The Florida Highway Patrol had previously characterized 26-year-old Robert Alex Corchado a “person of interest” in the Wednesday afternoon crash.

But spokeswoman Wanda Diaz said in a statement early Thursday that Corchado was driving the Dodge Durango that struck a convertible, which then jumped a curb and smashed into the KinderCare building. One girl died. Fourteen others, mostly children, were injured.

Corchado, who was most recently arrested in December on drugs charges and for leaving the scene of a crash involving damage, now is wanted on charges of leaving the scene of a crash involving a death and serious injuries. Officials believe Corchado was trying to flee Orlando. He’s been arrested eight times since 2000. More
