Deaf baby sitter: Toss plea in tot's bathtub-death case

SANFORD — A deaf baby sitter who was ordered to prison for 15 years for allowing an infant to drown in the bathtub now accuses a judge of misleading her and wants another day in court.

Mariah Berry, 20, of Sanford, pleaded no contest to aggravated manslaughter March 21. She admitted that she left a 9-month-old baby in the tub for more than an hour while she was in another room, scrolling through Facebook.

Berry is deaf and has an IQ of 65, according to her father, Thomas Berry. At Berry's plea hearing, Circuit Judge John Galluzzo suggested in open court that he might sentence her to just five or six years in prison.  More
