Doctor jailed after 9 spaniels die in SUV as he worked at Mount Pleasant hospital, police say

Mount Pleasant - A local doctor was arrested Wednesday morning on charges that the nine dogs, including two puppies, died earlier this week after he left him in his vehicle as he worked at East Cooper Medical Center, Mount Pleasant police said.

Dr. Charles Allen Bickerstaff, 64, of Catbird Retreat on James Island faces nine felony counts of ill treatment of animals, the Mount Pleasant Police Department said.

About an hour after he was booked into jail around 9 a.m. Wednesday, his bail was set at $90,000.

His attorney, Bill Thrower, said during the bail proceeding that Bickerstaff had an emergency at the hospital Monday and had thought that the dogs would be safe in his Ford Explorer. More
