DNA from intruder's beard leads to arrest in year-old burglary

VIENNA, N.Y. -- Police used DNA from beard hair found at the scene of a burglary last year to tie a current jail inmate to the crime.

The burglary occurred on Dec. 20, 2013, at a home on Haskins Road, the Oneida County Sheriff's Office said in a news release. The intruder, armed with a kitchen knife, confronted the female homeowner, deputies said.

During the fight, the homeowner was able to grab the man's beard before he fled the scene. The hair sample found in the living room was sent to the state police lab in Albany for DNA testing, deputies said.

In September, the Oneida County Sheriff's Office was told the hair was human. In October, the hair was tied to 54-year-old Leon M. Tennant.  More
