‘TODAY I DIE’: Police fire hail of bullets, kill career criminal

Staten Island – A demented ex-con, hours after promising a fight to the death, died in a hail of police bullets to end a six-hour Friday standoff at his Staten Island home, sources said.

A barrage of gunfire erupted around noon at the residence where suspect Garland Tyree (picture) had set an early morning fire — and then twice shot an FDNY lieutenant after a failed arrest attempt.

A gun-toting Tyree came running up the basement stairs and opened fired on the cops upstairs, police said. The officers on the first floor returned fire, and Tyree’s lifeless body was found at the bottom of the stairs, cops said.

The 38-year-old career criminal made a chilling Facebook post indicating that he would not surrender. “Today I die,” he declared just minutes after he opened fire on firefighters, cops and federal law enforcers. More
