Woman charged with fabricating story of abduction, assault after costly search effort

New York – An upstate New York woman who told police she was abducted by a strange man for two weeks and held hostage inside a wood shed has now been arrested for making up the crime.

Rachael Mattice, 24, has been charged with false reporting by the New York State Police and and Hamilton County officials after a witness said she fabricated an elaborate story of her kidnapping.

Mattice was reported missing on June 23, sparking an extensive search for the young woman that cost officials “well into the six figures” and involved hunting down around 400 leads, authorities said.

Her family held public vigils while she was gone and rallied her Johnstown, N.Y., community to pray for her return, ABC 10 reported. More
