Beaverton police take snapping turtle into 'custody' after animal is found in yard

On Monday, some residents found a snapping turtle inside the yard of their South Beaverton home. After reading a story about them, they knew the animals could be dangerous. And they wanted the reptile off their property.

So, they called Beaverton police.

An officer responded to the area around Southwest Davies Road and Otter Lane after the report of the turtle came in, said Officer Mike Rowe, a Beaverton police spokesman. The officer expected the turtle to be small. A baby.

But he found a 10-pound snapper, about one-foot wide by one-foot long, Rowe said. And, reportedly, the turtle wasn't happy.

A battle ensued.

The officer tried to get the turtle inside a metal garbage can. But the stubborn reptile wouldn't budge. More
