Gang member gets 54 years for ramming SUV and killing college student

A reputed Chicago gang member was sentenced to 54 years in prison Wednesday for ramming an SUV full of lost motorists who he mistakenly thought were members of a rival gang.

Shalimar Santiago, 30, was convicted in February of murder in the death of 18-year-old University of Illinois at Chicago student Stephanie Herrera of Melrose Park.

Judge Joseph M. Claps sentenced Santiago, who also had been convicted of several counts of aggravated battery for injuring seven of Herrera’s friends who were seated in the Lincoln Navigator in the early morning hours of Aug. 1, 2009.  Full Article
