Mother charged with murder of infant son

Tennessee - A Nashville mother has now been arrested on charges of first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse in connection to the suffocation death of her 7-month-old son, police said Thursday.

Jennifer Manuel, 23, who was confined to the psychological unit of a local hospital, was discharged Thursday and booked into custody by police officers. She is being held in lieu of $600,000 bond.

Manuel and her husband, Kenneth Laizure, 28, are accused of killing Constantine Laizure, who died May 19. The investigation began the day before when a call to 911 reported that Constantine was in need of emergency medical care, police said.

"Bruises and marks of injuries were found on the child's body, and he was in cardiac arrest," police said in a news release Thursday afternoon. "Paramedics transported Constantine to Vanderbilt and police were notified.

During the course of the investigation by Detectives Brett Kenney, Sarah Bruner and Selene Julia, it was determined that while Constantine was in a child carrier/car seat inside the home, a pillow and a blanket were wedged between his face and the car seat handle in an effort to silence his crying."
